Motorhomers helping motorhomers

A site road that is too narrow, a gate that is too low, a branch at 3 m: the motorhomers who came before you know. Share what you saw, and the next one will arrive with peace of mind.

  • Will my motorhome fit?

Pitch length and width, bends, clearance under the trees, hardstanding or grass: say whether a motorhome of 7 m or more gets onto a pitch.

Weighbridges

On a 3.5 t motorhome, payload disappears fast: passengers, water, bikes. A public weighbridge gives you the real weight, axle by axle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a motorhome on a car licence?

Yes, if its maximum authorised mass (MAM) is 3,500 kg or less, which is the case for most motorhomes. Above that, you need licence C1, valid up to 7,500 kg, which you already have if you passed your car test before 1 January 1997.

Will a car licence soon cover 4.25-tonne motorhomes?

An EU directive of 2025 allows this in the European Union, with training or a test. It does not apply in Great Britain: the limit for licence B remains 3,500 kg.

How do I work out a motorhome's payload?

Take the MAM minus the mass in running order, given by the manufacturer, then subtract passengers other than the driver, added options, water, gas and luggage. On a 3.5 t motorhome, 300 to 500 kg is often what is left.

Is a motorhome class 2 or class 3 at French tolls?

Class 2 if it is over 2 m and under 3 m high and does not exceed 3.5 t. It goes into class 3 from 3 m high or above 3.5 t, and into class 4 if it has 3 axles.

Which Crit'Air sticker for a motorhome in France?

A category M1 motorhome is classed like a car: diesel from 2011 onwards is Crit'Air 2, diesel from 2006 to 2010 is Crit'Air 3. The sticker costs from €3.85 on the official website, and the fine in a French low-emission zone (ZFE) is €68.

How can I tell whether a campsite takes a large motorhome?

Campsites rarely give the size of their pitches or the clearance under the trees. On Campernest, motorhomers who have stayed there tell you: read their reviews before you book, and add yours when you get back.
