Privacy policy
Updated on 3 November 2026
Campernest is a website where travellers help one another. You can use it without an account; a Nester account lets you save your vehicle and your campsites, and share your experience. Your data stays in Europe, is never sold and is never used for targeted advertising.
Data controller
HSLP, EURL, publisher of Campernest, 41 quai de Malakoff, 44000 Nantes, France. Contact: hello@campernest.eu
Without an account
You can browse the whole website without an account and without providing any information.
Route calculator: the start and destination addresses you type are sent to the French government address API (address search) and to OpenRouteService (HeiGIT, Heidelberg, Germany) to calculate the route. Campernest does not store them.
Your settings in the tools may be kept in your browser (local storage), on your device only.
Contact form: your name (optional), your email address and your message are sent to us by email so that we can reply; they are not stored on the website.
Your Nester account
All you need to create an account is an email address: we send you a 6-digit sign-in code, with no password. We keep:
- your email address, which is never displayed;
- your username, your avatar or your profile photo, which are public;
- your language, so that we write to you in the right language;
- your home town, if you provide it, to calculate the distances in your travel log; it is never displayed;
- your garage (dimensions and weights of your vehicles) and your saved campsites, visible only to you;
- your sign-in sessions (date, IP address and browser), for account security; they are deleted when they expire, no more than 90 days after your last visit.
Lost email address: if you no longer have access to your account's address, the form "No longer have access to your email address?" sends us by email your username, your old and new addresses and the detail you provide, so that we can check the account is yours before changing the address. Nothing is stored on the site.
Legal basis: performance of the service you request by creating an account.
What you share
Reviews, photos, questions and answers, “my vehicle got in” reports, flags and the information you add to a campsite page are public, under your username. They go live immediately and may be hidden afterwards by moderation.
Photos: metadata (EXIF), including GPS location and camera model, is removed before publication.
Translation: your reviews, questions, answers and photo captions may be translated automatically into the site's other languages by Mistral AI (France), so that travellers across Europe can read them. The original text is kept and remains visible (“Show original”).
Travel log: each stay is public or private, as you choose; a private stay is visible only to you. Your home town never appears.
Proposed events: the name, dates, place, website and details of an event you propose for the agenda are checked before publication, unlike other contributions. If it is published, it appears marked “Proposed by a Nester”, without your username; the proposal stays linked to your account for your experience points.
Weighbridges: when you add a weighbridge or complete a page (opening hours, price, access…), the information is published at once with the mention “Added by a Nester”, without your username. It stays linked to your account for your experience points and so that Campernest can undo a wrong change. Your position is only sent if you choose “I'm on the spot: use my position”, and it then becomes the weighbridge's position.
Mini-games: when you finish a game while signed in, your time joins the game's ranking with your pseudo and avatar, visible to everyone. If you choose to appear as “Anonymous”, or if your profile is private, your time is shown without a pseudo or avatar. Without an account, your time stays in your browser and is sent nowhere.
If you delete your account, your photos are erased and your other contributions (reviews, answers, access reports) become anonymous: they remain useful to other travellers, without your username.
History of campsites viewed
When you are signed in, Campernest keeps the list of campsite pages you view, with the date of your last visit. Without an account, nothing is kept: no IP address, no tracking cookie.
Why: to show you the campsites you have already seen (the eye on the cards) and to suggest suitable campsites, on the site and, if you have accepted the newsletter, by email.
The Campernest team can see this list, in order to suggest better campsites to you. It is never shown to other Nesters or to campsites.
Duration: 12 months after your last visit to a campsite, then deleted automatically.
“Hide from my history” removes a campsite from your list. Campernest keeps it for your suggestions until the end of this period.
Delete everything: if you turn off “Keep my history” in My account, after confirmation, the list is deleted entirely, on your side as on ours, and nothing more is recorded. You can also ask for deletion by email at the contact address.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in personalising the service, with your right to object at any time through the setting above.
Winter storage
Hosts: to offer a space, you give your first name and surname, your email address and, if you are a business, your company name and its registration number (optional). They are never displayed: on the listing you appear under your username, chosen at random and changeable once. Only campsites appear under their own name.
The listing shows the town, never the address: on the map, a 4 km circle around the centre of the town. If you enter an address, it is only given to the Nesters whose request you have accepted; you can also give it yourself in the conversation.
Account created by Campernest: at your request, a member of the team can enter your listing and create your account with your email address (or add the listing to your existing account). You then receive an email explaining this and telling you how to remove everything.
Requests and messages: when you ask for a space, the host receives your username, the dates, the type and dimensions of your vehicle and your message. Messages are read only by you and the other party. Campernest only reads a conversation if one of its messages is reported. Messages are deleted 12 months after the request ends; a reported conversation is kept while the report is being reviewed.
Photos of spaces are handled like other photos (metadata and GPS position removed). Descriptions and reviews may be translated automatically by Mistral AI (France).
The listing view counter works like the one for campsite pages: daily totals, with no cookie and no IP address. Hosts see the number of views of their listings.
If you delete your account, your listings are removed from the site and your pending requests are cancelled; your reviews remain published without your username.
Legal basis: performance of the service you request.
Emails
Sign-in code: sent each time you request it, valid for 15 minutes.
Changing your email address (in My account): a code is sent to the new address to confirm it, and the old address is told about the change, without the new one being shown in full.
Winter storage: the host is notified of a new request and of a new message, the Nester of the host's reply and of new messages. The email includes the text of the message.
“A Nester answered”: when someone answers your question. You can turn it off in “My account” or via the link at the bottom of each email.
Nesters newsletter: only if you have requested it in “My account” (a tick box, never ticked by default). Each newsletter contains an unsubscribe link. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
App launch: when the Campernest app comes out, every Nester will receive a single email announcing it, even without a newsletter subscription. The app uses the same account. This email contains a link to stop receiving messages from us, except sign-in codes. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in informing our members of a service linked to their account.
Campsites and managers
To introduce Campernest Pilot to campsites, we use the generic email address (contact, welcome desk, reception) that each campsite publishes on its website. We never keep an individual’s address. Each email contains an unsubscribe link; an unsubscribed address is never contacted again. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in presenting a professional service to professionals.
Texts written by managers in Campernest Pilot may be automatically translated into the website’s other languages by Mistral AI (France).
Campsite managers (Campernest Pilot)
Managers who claim their listing have a Campernest Pilot account, separate from Nester accounts. We keep:
- your first and last name, e-mail address and phone number;
- your password, encrypted (never in clear), and the two-factor authentication key if you turn it on;
- your company (name, SIRET), your role at the campsite and, where applicable, the evidence you provide to show that you manage the campsite;
- your sign-in sessions (date, IP address, browser) and the log of Campernest's decisions on your account and requests (approval, refusal), for security and as evidence;
- the texts, photos and information you publish on your listing, and their automatic translations by Mistral AI (France);
- if you buy an Encart À la une (featured listing): the encart chosen (country, position, weeks), the amount and the payment reference. The payment is processed by Stripe (see “Service providers”): we never see or keep your card number. Invoicing records are kept for 10 years (accounting obligation).
Legal basis: the contract between us (Campernest Pilot terms). Retention: for the duration of the contractual relationship, then 3 years as evidence of the claim. You can exercise your rights from your space or by writing to us.
Audience measurement
Our own view counter for campsite pages and articles uses no cookies, no IP addresses and no browser data: it only records daily totals per page, language and source (search, social network, email, direct link, etc.).
We also measure overall traffic with Freqo, a European, cookie-free analytics tool. It produces aggregate figures (page views, countries, sources); your IP address is passed to it so that each visitor is counted only once and their country can be determined.
Cookies
No analytics, advertising or social media cookies. That is why no cookie banner is needed.
Sign-in cookie (campernest.session_token): set only when you sign in, it keeps you signed in for up to 90 days. It is essential for your account.
“Around me” cookie (campernest_near): set only if you click “Around me” in the campsite directory. It contains your location rounded to about 1 km, is used solely to sort campsites by distance, is shared with no one and is deleted after one hour.
Security
To protect the website against bots and abuse, your IP address is held in memory for a few minutes to limit the number of pages requested; it is not stored. Only addresses blocked for excessive requests are recorded in the server’s technical logs, which are deleted automatically by rotation, usually within a few weeks. For forms, the IP address is turned into an anonymous fingerprint (hashed with a secret salt) and is never kept in plain text.
Service providers
Our service providers process data within the European Union: OVH SAS (hosting, France), Brevo (sending emails, France), Mistral AI (translating managers’ and Nesters’ texts, France), Freqo (analytics, European Union).
One single exception: payment for the Encarts À la une (featured listings), bought by campsites in Campernest Pilot, goes through Stripe (Stripe Payments Europe, Ireland). Stripe may transfer this payment data to the United States, in particular to its parent company Stripe, Inc. These transfers are covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and by the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses. This only concerns campsites that buy an encart, never Nesters or visitors.
No data is sold or rented.
Retention periods
Account and contributions: for as long as your account exists. You can delete it at any time in “My account”; deletion is immediate.
Sign-in sessions: until they expire (90 days at most).
Winter storage messages: 12 months after the request ends.
History of campsites viewed: 12 months after your last visit to each campsite, then deleted automatically.
Unsubscribed addresses: kept on an opt-out list so that we never write to you again.
Server technical logs: deleted automatically by rotation, usually within a few weeks.
Your rights
In “My account”, you can at any time download all your data (JSON file), correct your profile, stop emails and delete your account.
You can also exercise your rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection by writing to hello@campernest.eu. We reply within one month. If you believe your rights have not been respected, you can lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority (CNIL) (cnil.fr).
