Van travellers helping each other

A campervan gets in almost everywhere, but not under every height barrier, nor onto every grass pitch after rain. Share what you saw on site.

  • The good pitches

Hardstanding or grass, shade, electricity, peace and quiet: say what you liked or did not, for those who live in their van.

Frequently asked questions

Does a campervan need a special licence?

No. A campervan or panel van conversion can be driven on licence B as long as its MAM does not exceed 3,500 kg, which is almost always the case.

Can a campervan stay in class 1 at French tolls?

Yes, if it is 2 m high or less and does not exceed 3.5 t: that is the case for some pop-top campervans, roof down. Above 2 m, it goes into class 2.

How much more does class 2 cost than class 1?

About 50 to 65% more depending on the route. From Paris to Lyon, allow €64.30 in class 2 against €41.30 for a car.

Does a panel van conversion have more payload than a motorhome?

Not necessarily: being lighter, it often keeps 400 to 600 kg, but its overhangs are short and the rear axle remains the limit with e-bikes.

Which Crit'Air sticker for a diesel campervan in France?

A category M1 campervan is classed like a car: diesel from 2011 onwards is Crit'Air 2, diesel from 2006 to 2010 is Crit'Air 3. The sticker costs from €3.85 on the official website, and the fine in a French low-emission zone (ZFE) is €68.
